Description : The Firethroat is a bluish-slate or olive-brown passerine with a short tail (length 15 cm, wing 7 cm, bill 1.7 cm, tarsus 2.7 cm, tail 5 cm approximately). In the breeding season, the male has bluish-slaty upperpart, blackish tail and buff washed white underpart. Its lores, ear-coverts, cheek, sides of the neck and the vicinity of the eyes are black. It has brownish flanks and whitish patches on the edges of the neck. It has flame-orange coloured chin, throat and breast with black borders on its sides. It has blackish bill and black or brown irises. The non-breeding male has buffish underparts. The female has olive-brown upperpart, brown tail, orange-buff underparts and rufous cast to the undertail-covert. It has pale-ochraceous throat, ochraceous-brown breast and flanks. Its white belly is washed with ochraceous. It feeds mainly on insects. It breeds in the summer.
