Description : The Chestnut-bellied Nuthatch is a small passerine grey above and chestnut below with a striking white cheek patch (length 12 cm, weight 20.5 g, wing 8 cm, bill 2 cm, tarsus 1.9 cm, tail 4 cm). The male looks bluish-slaty above and deep chestnut-brown below. It has a broad black eye-stripe running from its lore to the nape, and a white chin and cheek. Its vent is marked with pale scaling and the tail has white sub-terminal spots. The female has paler cinnamon brown underparts and a less prominent whitish chin. Both sexes have brown irises, plumbeous legs and feet, and brown claws and a strong straight bicoloured bill: blackish on the upper mandible and a plumbeous lower mandible with a black tip. It feeds on insects, grubs, seeds and nuts. It breeds in April-May.
